Computers can sometimes lose the EDID -- basically the electronic identification of a display which lists its possible resolutions and frequencies. When displays are switched away or disconnected and then reconnected, the EDID can be lost and the computer can lose the ability to display the image properly or at all.
The Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDN is a DVI Detective which solves this problem by memorizing the EDID information. After a quick and simple EDID recording process, simply connect the computer's video source to the DVI Detective, where it will fool the computer into thinking that a display is present, even when the port is inactive or the display is switched away to another computer.
NOTE: The Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDN does not support HDCP. Please use the Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDP (DVI-I) or the Gefen EXT-HD-EDIDPN (HDMI) for applications requiring HDCP support.
The Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDN memorizes the EDID profile of the connected source and the display. This Virtual EDID ensures perfect video resolution and frequency timing. Activating the write-protection switch on the outside of the unit will lock the settings from to prefent any accidental over-ride.
Setting up the EXT-DVI-EDIDN takes only seconds! After a simple initial programming step involving only the monitor and the DVI Detective, you simply connect the video source on one side of the DVI Detective and the extension module or switcher on the other side.
After initial setup, no power or buttons are required for operation of the DVI Detective N.
The DVI Detective N supports High Definition DVI or VGA* resolutions up to 1920x1200, 2K, and 3840x2400 / 4K Ultra HD (Dual Link).
*DVI Detective N is equipped with DVI ports, but it is also compatible with VGA by using a VSA-11 DVI-I to VGA adapter (available separately).
With a 2.6"W x 1.8"H x 1.2"D footprint and only 0.18 lbs (4.87 oz), the Gefen EXT-DVI-EDIDN takes up less space than a pack of cards and weighs about ½ of an iPhone 6. Setting up the EXT-DVI-EDIDN is very simple and only takes a few seconds! After the following steps below, you can simply leave the video output plugged into DVI Detective and plug in the extension module or switcher on the other side. No buttons or power will be required for operation after this.
Before using the DVI Detective, the unit must be programmed with an EDID. In most cases, the DVI Detective should be programmed with the EDID of the display (or other sink device) to which you are connecting the source. Once programmed, the EDID data will be read by the source, providing all the necessary details of the type of signal that the display (or other sink device) can process. Although any DVI Detective can be programmed with any EDID, the display (or other sink device) must be able to support those features.
