The Avocent DSView 4 Software is the next generation of DSView software. This Management Software provides access and control of IT equipment in data centers via Avocent appliances, embedded service processor technology and 3rd party appliances. It gives the IT user remote visibility and control of devices for everyday administration tasks, such as problem resolution and maintenance. Many DSView customers experience ROI within 6 months through improved operative efficiencies alone. DSView functions as a centralized access portal for data center managers. DSView excels at providing a simple "Single Pane of Glass" type of access for day-to-day control and management of servers, network devices, embedded server management controllers and intelligent Rack Power Device control. To accomplish this goal, DSView aggregates the Avocent appliances that are connected to your equipment. DSView aggregates the management settings on the various appliances into a single console and simplifies Target Device access and control tasks. DSView 4 takes great strides in the direction toward appliance and system management.

The software features a PostgreSQL database which provides the benefit of an open framework database allowing administrators to design custom reports, and utilize any 3rd party reporting system already available. Leveraging the new open framework database to integrate data exchange and process flow, maximizes the ability of this new database to externally access DSView 4 features. This software is system-neutral, thereby eliminating any constraints for data centers to purchase specialized equipment and maintain proprietary solutions, as it provides the ability to integrate with existing technology to read into other systems for a comprehensive management and control solution. DSView 4 provides the in- and out-of-band access necessary to manage and control data centers assets across the enterprise, regardless of geographic location.

The software includes VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, supported by FIPs 140-2, which enables DSView to consolidate multiple access consoles into a convenient easy to use "Single Pane of Glass". The unique hub and spoke architecture, coupled with the new open framework database, expands reporting and auditing capabilities and improves data synchronization with 3rd party CMDB's. The device provides management enhancements such as: KVM Re-synch, Virtual Targets, Single Port Re-synch, Auto Target Naming based upon parent appliance, global parameter changes, and user and group permission changes. New security features answer the industry need to support compliance. FIPS 140-2 support gains the ability to control FIPS state/mode of supported appliances, and as a government security standard it encompasses both hardware and software security traits. The ACS 6000 and MergePoint Unity Appliances have been modified at their software/firmware level to incorporate an OpenSSL (Secured Network Communications) module and have been FIPS 140-2 certified. The ACS/MPU Appliances will not utilize this FIPS "crypto" module by default which is why DSView 4 will become capable of enabling the FIPS module/mode. The ACS/MPU Appliances are not certified to be compliant with FIPS140-2 from a hardware nor software perspective, but when the FIPS module is active, the Appliances communicate with DSView and with Users/Customers using FIPS certified encryption. Without this supporting DSView, the ACS and the MPU wouldn't even been considered by a DOD/Government customer as a possible purchasable product due to the lack of any FIPS support.
